Glowing

fletchsuper:

People always say that life is like a box of chocolates; you’d never know what you’ll get the next time you pick one out of the box. Will it be your favorite? Will it be that one flavor you despise so much you gag even when you think of it? Life is so full of surprise, and Rachel’s chocolate, this time, is certainly a surprise. It’s not her favorite, because that would be plain milk chocolate, and it’s not her least favorite either (anything with dried fruit in it, yuck). It’s something new, something she never tasted before. At the first bite, she feels something hard in it, like nuts, maybe. She also tastes something bitter, sharp, strong, and uncomfortable in her mouth, something like lesson. But then the chocolate melts away on her tongue and a sweet taste bursts.  It is sweet, sweet like caramel, like milk, her favorite. It makes her moan and close her eyes in bliss because it’s so delicious. It warms her.

She smiles softly and sighs, stroking her belly. The swell is starting to show, and she can feel kicks now and then. Just to think that something is growing inside her belly makes her grin. To think that she is carrying a life makes her heart pound excitedly.  She finishes the chocolate and drinks a glass of water. Her phone pings on her bed. She reaches for it, a message from her boyfriend: Arrive soon to pick you up. Love you. They’re going to go to the hospital today, for the routine check-up, and she has this faint idea of asking the doctor about the gender of her baby. She feels nervous and excited at the same time. She sends back Waiting, and lies back on the bed, pillows comfortably supporting her back.

This is unplanned. At the age of 22, she never planned on having a baby. She didn’t think she would be ready. Being a mother, that’s a great responsibility. She didn’t think she’s ready for the commitment, for the midnight cries, for the fever weeks, for the dirty diapers, for the fights with her boyfriend. Her relationship had never been easy, and adding a baby into the equation? She didn’t think she could cope.

But it happened. Everything she didn’t plan, it happened. That’s life for you. And all Rachel can do now is being grateful. She is grateful for her boyfriend, whose respond has been great, who is very supportive and caring. She is grateful for the opportunity to be more mature, to prove to herself that she can do this, that she’s strong, that’s she’s loving. She is grateful, for her baby is healthy, and that’s all she asks.

She doesn’t want to whine. She doesn’t want to sigh and regret. It all has happened, and what’s important to her now is her future, their future. All she wants is that her baby to grow healthy, safely, beautifully. She imagines her baby opening its eyes and smiling. She imagines a wedding. She imagines a happy life. She puts all of that in her prays and she hopes. Nothing’s wrong with hopes, and hopes are very powerful things that keep you happy, keep your heart intact, and keep you driving forward and opening all the chocolate boxes.

Rachel rubs her belly and feels a little kick. She beams a smile. Another ping alerts her of another message from her boyfriend. Downstairs.  She picks her purse and jacket, and then rushes downstairs to meet her boyfriend. He stands beside his car, waiting and smiling when he sees her. Rachel has always been a gorgeous girl, but right now, with the little bump on her belly, she is particularly beautiful. Her face is beaming with happiness. Inside the car, her boyfriend reaches for her belly from the driver seat, stroking gently, and says, “You’re glowing.” Rachel rolls her eyes playfully, “Really.” She squeezes her boyfriend’s hand and smiles. “Let’s go.”
